Float Like a Cloud: T3 Tailspring Suspension Systems Revolutionize Taildragger Landings

After years of development, the T3 Dualshock suspension system earned Supplemental Type Certificates for the Cessna 170 and PA-18 Super Cub

Alaska Gear Company has collaborated with Dan Dufault for nearly a decade to bring a game-changing innovation to general aviation: the T3 Tailwheel Suspension Systems. These rugged, industry-leading shock-absorbent tailsprings have transformed the taildragger experience, offering smoother landings and improved ground handling. What started as a simple prototype in Dan Dufault's workshop has evolved into a sophisticated upgrade trusted by backcountry pilots across Alaska and the rest of the world.

Dufault, an A&P and IA with over 30 years of experience, recognized the limitations of traditional leaf spring tailwheels. He envisioned a better solution—a direct replacement rear suspension for taildraggers. He brought his vision into reality by building a prototype for his super cub in his shop.

The results were astonishing, and the difference was undeniable compared to traditional leaf springs.

"It felt like the tail was floating with no sensation of it touching the ground," Dufault recalled.

After the first prototype, Dufault began making tail suspensions for interested pilots but soon could not keep up with the demand. In 2016, Dufault partnered with Airframes Alaska, now Alaska Gear Company, to manufacture and distribute the T3 tailspring.

The T3 line consisted of three bolt-on coil shock setups: the T3 Heavy Duty, T3 LSA, and T3 Super Heavy Duty. These innovative "tail shocks" dampen the impact of hardtail landings, soften the jarring experience during rough off-airport taxiing, and potentially reduce tailwheel shimmy.

The original product line catered to a range of experimental aircraft, including:

  • T3 Heavy Duty: For Piper-style aircraft up to 2,000 pounds gross weight.
  • T3 LSA: For experimental Light Sport Aircraft (homebuilds, Kitfox, Rans, etc.) up to 1,320 pounds gross weight.
  • T3 Super Heavy Duty: A double coil design for heavier aircraft up to 2,500 pounds gross weight.

The T3 tail shocks are compatible with Scott/ABI 3200 single-bolt tailwheels, and Alaska Gear Company also provides steering chains and aircraft-specific mounting hardware.

A Major Milestone: STC Approval for Cessna 170 T3 Twin-Shock Tailwheel Suspension

While the initial offerings focused on experimental aircraft, Dufault knew the T3 would be an invaluable addition to certified aircraft and began diligently pursuing the STC (Supplemental Type Certificates) for the PA-18 Super Cub and Cessna 170.

Dufault was awarded the STC for the PA-18 in September 2023, and shortly after, Alaska Gear Company obtained PMA approval to manufacture the certified version. The PA-18 T3 - Super Duty suspension is a bolt-on replacement that works with a Scott or ABI 3200 single bolt tailwheel setup with dimensions at 16" x 3" and weighs in at 6.6 lbs. STC SA00417BO.

In December 2024, STC approval was granted for the Cessna 170 T3 Twin-Shock Tailwheel Suspension. This means that owners of this classic aircraft can now experience the distinctive benefits of the T3 system, which enhances both safety and comfort. This STC marks a major step forward for T3, opening doors to a wider range of aircraft and demonstrating the commitment to bringing this technology to certified aircraft.

The T3 Tailwheel Suspension Systems represent a true advancement in taildragger technology. From the initial spark of an idea to the current STC approval for the Cessna 170, the journey of the T3 system proves Super Cub's North x Alaska Gear Company's commitment to advancing general aviation technology. Whether you're flying certified aircraft or experimental, the T3 system promises a smoother, more controlled, and ultimately more enjoyable flying experience. Browse all T3 Tailwheel Suspensions.
