The Challenge of True Warmth
Everyone knows the feeling. You’re out chasing an adventure. Maybe you’re hauling firewood, cheering from frozen bleachers, or trekking across a snow-packed trail. You’ve layered up perfectly: insulated pants, merino underlayers, your warmest hat and gloves. And still, the first place you feel the cold is your toes.
It starts as a faint chill. Then it creeps into the soles of your feet, climbs to your ankles, and soon, warmth feels like a distant memory. True, lasting warmth, the kind that stays with you for the entire day, no matter what winter throws your way, is one of the toughest challenges to conquer.
Most boots promise warmth, but few can actually deliver it through demanding conditions. Frozen puddles that seep through seams. Hours of snowmobiling as powder builds on your boots. The cold doesn’t give up easily, and neither do we.
At Alaska Gear Company, our mission is to redefine what warmth means for extreme cold-weather boots. We’re committed to designing, developing, and delivering the warmest winter boots. One that keeps you comfortable, protected, and ready for whatever the season demands.
The Inspiration & Design Philosophy
The inspiration for the VBX Bunny Boot began with a piece of Alaskan history: the original military surplus Bunny Boot. For decades, this boot has been a trusted companion to soldiers and workers braving the most unforgiving cold. In Alaska, it’s more than just footwear. The Bunny Boot is a symbol of durability, resilience, and reliability in the harshest conditions. You’ll still find old pairs being worn, traded, and cherished across the state. That legacy inspired us to reimagine what modern innovation could do for a classic that’s stood the test of time.

At Alaska Gear Company, our philosophy is simple: if we’re going to create something new, it has to be as good, or better, than what came before it. The original Bunny Boot set a high bar, and we weren’t about to compromise what made it great. So, we started with what worked: complete waterproofing and the proven design that kept generations of Alaskans warm. Then we layered in modern advancements such as improved insulation technology, upgraded materials, and enhanced comfort, all while keeping the heart of the original design intact.
The result is a boot that bridges past and present: honoring the tradition that’s rooted in Alaskan culture, while delivering the comfort and performance today’s adventurers need. For us, this isn’t just product development, it’s preservation. We’re keeping a classic alive, ensuring that the next generation of explorers, workers, and outdoor enthusiasts can experience the same trusted warmth and protection that defined the original.
With the Bunny Boot VBX product line, we’re not just making boots. We’re continuing a story built on history, innovation, and the enduring pursuit of true warmth.
Inside the Development Process
Designing the warmest winter boot wasn’t a quick process. The commitment took three years of testing, refining, and retesting in the unforgiving conditions of Alaska. Every iteration of the VBX Bunny Boot faced the elements head-on. From snowmobiling across frozen tundra to reindeer herd management, mushing, moose surveys, sheep hunts, homesteading, and mountaineering. Our prototypes were put through real Alaskan use cases. If they could survive here, they could thrive anywhere.

To truly understand and measure warmth, we tested each model (the VBX Bunny Boot, VBX MAX, VBX Composite, and VBX LITE) alongside an original Air Boss Bunny Boot. Using an electrically heated foot testing apparatus, we simulated the heating and sweating of a human foot while tracking heat loss across nine distinct zones. This allowed us to see not just if a boot was warm, but where it was losing heat and how we could make it better.
Accuracy mattered, so we often retested and rebuilt to validate every improvement. From reinforcing eyelets for durability to layering materials for optimized insulation and adding a neoprene tongue for additional warmth, every detail was deliberate.
Each version brought us closer to our goal: a modern Bunny Boot that carries the toughness of its heritage and the innovation of today, engineered to keep your feet warm, dry, and ready for anything cold weather can throw at them.
Real-World Proof

The true test of warmth isn’t in a lab but out in the elements. After years of development, we knew the VBX Bunny Boot had to prove itself where it mattered most: in Alaska’s coldest, toughest, and most unpredictable conditions.
So, we put them on the feet of people who live their lives in the cold. From reindeer herders to heavy-equipment operators, our testers stepped into real-world challenges that pushed the boots to their limits. The feedback was immediate and powerful.
“Sometimes after showing this curious winter-boot-wearer the features, they take me up on walking around in them, to feel just how comfortable they really are. I couldn’t believe people would slip right into them after my hot foot just came out.”
“Coming in and out of facilities from 70°F one moment to –44°F the next, every other work boot sole becomes hard as rock — but these stay soft and grip. In my line of work, that means everything.”
Over and over, testers echoed the same thing: “My feet never got cold.” Even in flooded creek submersion tests, the new Bunny Boot held its own: agile, grippy, and warm even after being soaked through.
“The new Bunny’s were much more agile on the ice, more grippy — and when flooded, kept my foot just as warm.”
For us, this is what success looks like- not just comfort or performance, but confidence. The confidence that, no matter the temperature, terrain, or task, your feet will stay warm. The VBX Bunny Boot doesn’t just claim warmth, it proves it.

Introducing the Warmest Winter Boot
After years of testing, building, and refining, the results are here: the Bunny Boot VBX Product line. They are the culmination of generations of Alaskan know-how, military-grade innovation, and relentless pursuit of warmth that lasts.
Engineered for extreme cold-weather protection, the VBX Bunny Boot delivers unmatched warmth, dryness, durability, and comfort. Built with 100% waterproof vulcanized rubber, the boot utilizes a fully encapsulated insulation system.
At the heart of this evolution is our Vapor Barrier X (VBX) technology, which prevents condensation from penetrating and freezing inside the insulation. Combined with a multi-layer insulation system, it locks in heat and keeps the cold out, maintaining consistent warmth even in the harshest conditions. Vented hydrophobic insoles wick moisture and add support, while reinforced outsoles and high-impact zones enhance comfort and stability through long days on ice, snow, and rock.
This is more than a boot, it’s the embodiment of everything we stand for. A bridge between tradition and innovation. Proof that warmth can be engineered, tested, and trusted. From the first step out the door to the last light of the day, your feet stay warm.

At Alaska Gear Company, we set out to redefine what warmth means. With the VBX Bunny Boot, we did just that.
Winter doesn’t wait so neither should you. Discover the warmest boot and experience cold-weather comfort like never before.
